Buying the devices is the short part. The fleet starts working when enrollment, applications, accessories, support, and the first Monday morning are planned together.
Before purchase
- Application owner named for the warehouse management system (WMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), or terminal emulation (TE)
- Device class specified — the class now, the model later
- Mobile device management (MDM) tenant owner named
- Enrollment method chosen: zero-touch, quick response (QR) code, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) staging, or another documented route
- Operating system (OS) version and upgrade path written down
- Accessory kit frozen (one kit per role)
- Spare ratio agreed
- Wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless wide area network (WWAN) design exists for every site
- Acceptance criteria drafted: what “done” means on the floor
Staging
- Golden image or managed configuration documented
- Test users complete the top five transactions
- Lost-device and wipe procedure tested
- Battery and charger labelled by site
- Spare pool location and sign-out rule agreed
Go-live
- Super-users trained before general rollout
- Floor support for the first five shifts
- Defect log (device, accessory, application, Wi-Fi) with a named owner
- Return merchandise authorization (RMA) path posted in the cage
- Day-30 review: breakage, dead batteries, tickets by cause
We can run this list with you as part of deployment and support, or you can hand it to your own information technology team. Either way it works best as a living document: a named owner on every line, and evidence that each test was done.
