A smartphone is a computer you already understand. A warehouse device is a tool that gets dropped, shared, scanned all shift, and left on a charger someone else owns. Those are different products.
When a smartphone is enough
- Light indoor use, one user, no all-day scanning
- The application is a simple browser form
- You already run mobile device management (MDM) and hold a replacement budget
- No cold chain, no yard, no conveyor spray
When a smartphone becomes harder to justify
- All-day scanning. Put a phone camera and a purpose-built scan engine against the same labels and the same workflow. Record scan time, failures, and rescans, especially on damaged labels.
- Shared shifts. Test the battery, case, handoff, and charging routine across the actual shifts. Put representative drops in the acceptance plan.
- Environment. Match dust, rain, -18 °C work, and 1.8 m drops against current operating-temperature, ingress-protection (IP), and drop specifications.
- Accessories. Compare the complete working kit: holster, trigger, sled, charger, case, and spare. Unit price is one line of several.
- Support. Compare both return paths. A managed fleet defines the return merchandise authorization (RMA) route, the spare location, the owner, and the replacement procedure before go-live.
The two-year view
Compare four lines, not the unit price alone: devices, accessories, breakage replacements, and lost hours. Where breakage data does not exist yet, a 90-day log will produce it before the standard is set.
